ALMOST 99% OF PROPERTY OWNERS OPT NOT TO APPEAL 2017 ASSESSMENTS
VICTORIA – Consistent with past years, less than two per cent of British Columbia property owners have appealed their 2017 property assessments.
For 2017, a total of 27,887 property assessments were appealed which equates to about 1.38 per cent of the approximately 2.01 million total properties on the 2017 property assessments.
This low rate of appeals is similar with past years (consistently below two per cent) as demonstrated by the table below:

Any person is entitled to file a Notice of Complaint (or appeal) about an assessment on the grounds set out in Section 32 of the Assessment Act and to have that assessment reviewed by an independent Property Assessment Review Panel. Year to year, well over 98 per cent of property owners consistently accept their property assessments without proceeding to a formal, independent review of their assessments.
BC Assessment values over 2 million properties in nine separate property classes. Upon revisions decided by the Property Assessment Review Panels, the value of all real estate on the annual provincial Assessment Roll is over $1.68 trillion for 2017, an increase of 25 per cent from 2016.
These numbers are preliminary and are subject to change. Final numbers will be available at the end of March.
