BC Assessment Reaching Out to Local Property Owners Impacted by Wildfires
VICTORIA – BC Assessment wants to remind any property owners impacted by the summer wildfires to be aware of possible changes to 2018 property assessments, depending upon the geographic location.
For impacted properties within the Northern BC/Cariboo Region:
"Over the past few months, we have been identifying and reviewing the property damage that occurred from the wildfires this past summer," says Jarret Krantz, Deputy Assessor for Northern BC. "We have been focused on ensuring the current property conditions are used to determine 2018 property assessments."
While BC Assessment is fairly confident that most Northern BC impacted property owners have been identified and contacted, it is still possible that some properties may still need to be identified within the Cariboo region.
Impacted property owners, who have not yet had any contact with BC Assessment, are advised to contact BC Assessment at 1-866-825-8322 ext. 26405 as soon as possible. For more information, view and share this video prepared by BC Assessment.
For impacted properties within the Thompson Okanagan Region:
BC Assessment was able to identify the impacted property owners within the Thompson Okanagan and have made the necessary adjustments to assessments. At this point, property owners can expect to see applicable changes to their property assessments when the 2018 property assessments are mailed.
"We are fairly confident that we were able to identify all impacted properties within the Thompson Okanagan region and make the necessary changes for the upcoming 2018 property assessments," says Tracy Wall, Deputy Assessor for the Thompson Okanagan Region.
"We also want to remind property owners that all 2018 assessment notices will be delivered in early January. We recognize the difficult situation that property owners have been in, and we want to work with you to ensure your property assessment is accurate because property assessments are used to determine your property taxes." adds Wall. "If anyone impacted by the wildfires, upon receiving the notices, feels that your assessment has not been adjusted appropriately, then you are urged to contact us to discuss the matter before January 31."
BC Assessment greatly appreciates the sharing of information from regional districts as well as BC Wildfire Services that was crucial to identifying properties that may have been damaged. As a result, BC Assessment was able to identify impacted properties and make the necessary adjustments to property assessments.
