VICTORIA – Less than one percent of B.C. property owners appealed their 2025 property assessments.
“For 2025, we achieved one of our lowest appeal rates on record. Less than 1% of properties were appealed, meaning more than 99% of property owners accepted their assessments as fair and accurate without appealing," says BC Assessment Assessor Bryan Murao. “We know as more property owners access the market sale comparisons and property information that is available on our website, the vast majority of British Columbians are satisfied with their property assessments."
Year over year, more than 98 percent of property owners consistently accept their property assessments without filing an appeal.
A total of 19,925 property assessments, or less than one percent, of all properties in British Columbia were appealed for 2025, marking BC Assessment's lowest appeal rate compared to past years:
Appeal Rates | 2025 | 2024 | 2023 | 2022 | 2021 | 2020 | 2019 |
Total Number of Properties Appealed | 19,925 | 22,798 | 30,268 | 30,571 | 22,371 | 25,445 | 32,180 |
% of Total Properties Appealed from Total Property Count* | 0.9% | 1.0% | 1.4% | 1.4% | 1.1% | 1.2% | 1.6% |
*Total number of British Columbia properties for 2025 is 2,207,009
“While the overall number of properties in B.C. continues to increase, the total number of assessments appealed has actually decreased considerably over the past couple of years," says Murao. “The low level of appeal rates speaks to BC Assessment's transparency and consistency in providing fair and accurate property assessments while providing the public with easy access to information used to determine assessment values."
The deadline to appeal 2025 property assessments was January 31. Independent Property Assessment Review Panels met to consider appeals between February 1 and March 15, 2025. After revisions by the Property Assessment Review Panels, the final total assessed value of all B.C. properties is approximately $2.82 trillion for 2025, an increase of about 1.3 percent from the 2024 total of $2.79 trillion.
