Many parts of B.C. have been affected by flooding and wildfires in 2017. We appreciate that as a property owner, you may have questions regarding your upcoming 2018 property assessment.
How will this potentially affect my 2018 assessment?
Any damage affecting the value of your property that is not repaired or replaced by October 31, 2017, will be considered when determining your 2018 assessment value. Damage occurring this year does not affect 2017 assessments (received this past January) or your 2017 property taxes.
BC Assessment understands that flooding and wildfires may have had a serious impact on some farming operations. BC Assessment and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will review options to help farms affected by flooding or fires. Farmers are encouraged to contact their local BC Assessment offices to review details of their farming operations.
Identifying Property Damage
Using a number of sources such as mapping, emergency service notifications and self-reporting, BC Assessment will identify affected areas, and will be proactive in obtaining the most accurate information available. Having the most accurate information will help ensure that your 2018 property assessment is fair and accurate.
BC Assessment will initiate contact with owners of properties identified as damaged or potentially damaged. Being sensitive to the fluidity of the situation, we anticipate most contact will occur in September and October.
