Over 98% of property owners agree with their 2023 assessments

​VICTORIA –Less than two per cent of B.C. property owners appealed their 2023 property assessments. 

“The British Columbia real estate market with over two million properties is an ongoing major topic of conversation. Property owners have a keen interest in their assessments and are using our website to review the market sale comparisons and property information that we provide," says BC Assessment Assessor Bryan Murao. “The result is that the vast majority of British Columbians are satisfied with their 2023 assessments."

Year over year, more than 98 per cent of property owners consistently accept their property assessments without filing an appeal.

A total of 30,268 property assessments or 1.4 per cent of all properties in British Columbia were appealed for 2023, a very typical rate compared to past years:

“While the overall number of properties in BC continues to increase, the number of 2023 assessments appealed actually decreased slightly compared to last year. Consistently, less than two per cent of property owners file a property assessment appeal," says Murao. “The low level of appeal rates speaks to BC Assessment's consistency in providing fair and accurate property assessments while providing the public with easy access to information used to determine assessment values."

The deadline to appeal 2023 property assessments was January 31. Independent Property Assessment Review Panels met to consider appeals between February 1 and March 15, 2023. After revisions by the Property Assessment Review Panels, the final total assessed value of all B.C. properties is approximately $2.72 trillion for 2023, an increase of about 12 per cent from the 2022 total of $2.44 trillion.
